Wading Through the Jury Pool

untitled.bmpI’m in a jury pool and so far, things are going swimmingly.

Although it’s not the most convenient thing for me to do, if I were selected, I would consider it an honor and my duty to serve in the administration process of the American judicial system.   I’ve heard many comments to the contrary from my fellow Americans in the jury pool.  Many would rather drown than serve.

How about a ladder to help a brother or sister out of the pool?  What could he or she say to help lessen the chance of being selected?  Here, I’ll get you started.

“I’m impartial, but all the voices in my head say he’s guilty.”

“Does it matter that I think the defendant is hot?”

“Hazel and Jimmy think he’s guilty.”

“Does this bathing suit make me look impartial?”

I don’t think it would be so bad to be selected for jury duty. You get out of work and still get paid. As long as you aren’t sequestered it seems like a cool deal. Kinda like a really boring vacation.

if i post his bail do i own him

  3. rt Says:

Do judges still wear those stupid white wigs?

  4. suzie talley Says:

You could also get to be friends with the defendant. I heard OJ Simpson got friendly with a juror when he asked her for his hat and gloves back.

  5. Colleen Spillane Says:

    Is that Dom DeLuise?

  6. bc317 Says:

Wouldn’t want to be the water in THAT pool…

  7. sparky Says:

I was foreman on my jury panel last year! It was so much fun I can’t wait to do it again! Sherri you are a celebrity don’t you think that you will distract people’s attention away from the case?

  8. Trish Says:

Sherri is this YOU in this pic? I believe you actually WANTED to serve on this jury. As crazy as you act at work…surely there’s something you could’ve told the judge to get off this case. Why didn’t you hit on *him*?

  9. Prisoner of Love Says:

Lots of eligible bachelors around the courthouse…

  10. rt Says:

    Especially at the bus station.

  11. Prisoner of Love Says:

    …I know, FUN!

  12. Mel Says:

    And the cops are cute!

  13. cirtnaT Says:

Its pretty simple. Start by telling them that you are a member of the media. They won’t be able to get you out the door fast enough. Case closed.

  14. Sherri Says:

    You TWs are hysterical!

cirtnaT: They seemed to be aware of my media affiliation and not care after questioning.

I got selected for the jury and will report for trial tomorrow. It’s not a case that was on the news.

But you’re right…I’ve been tossed quickly in the past in higher-profile cases because of prior knowledge of the case.

Suzie: OMG Becca! (Hand cupped over mouth)!!!! Are you comparing me to OJ?

CT, that would be fun if I got off work. But that’s for normal people who work 8-5. I’ve been reporting for jury instruction/questioning in the morning, then going to work in the afternoon and night.

Other than that, I’m happy to play a part in our judicial system. I will give this all my focus and remain fair, as I would hope others would do if I or someone I loved were involved in a trial. It’s the whole…do unto others deal.

Sparky, as Mayor Or More (MOM) of Greenwood, I would think you would have been the foreman!

Trish…uh…the judge is very nice, professional, respectful and MARRIED!

I love y’all’s (fav word alert!) comments…what if I raised my hand in the courtroom and asked for someone to address them?

    Or not.

  15. jchristie Says:

Ask the judge if you can get an exclusive interview with the defendant.

I enjoyed jury duty and it was interesting to be part of the process. Yes, it’s boring at times, especially when they keep ushering you out of the courtroom why the lawyers argue whether something can be said in front of the jury. I was on a murder trial and on the 3rd or 4th day, just before the Coroner was going to testify, we were told the defendant took a plea deal. It was funny because they polled us and we all were leaning towards self-defense and then the judge told us that the Coroner was going to testify that the victim had been struck from BEHIND! No wonder the guy took the plea deal! Watch out for those Sheriff Deputies…one of them gave me a greeting card one day on the way back from lunch. Yikes!

  17. HRB2910j67 Says:

So is it official!!!? We are all Talley Wackers (WC)?

  18. Sherri Says:

    What’s WC?

  19. cirtnaT Says:

In completely unrelated news, Talley… RUN (or drive) to the video store and get “Into the Wild” (not to be confused with “Girls Gone Wild”!) You are REALLY gonna LOVE this movie!

  20. Sherri Says:

Okay, thanks. What would happen if I suggest the jury watch it before the court proceedings?

  21. cirtnaT Says:

They, too, would probably enjoy it… but, really, it would probably just delay the whole works for about two hours… ;)

  22. Trish Says:

Well, uh….is the defendant cute, at least?

  23. jchristie Says:

Trish, I hope you’re not patrolling the processing room of the Shreveport police department for dates. It’s not exactly like picking a puppy from the pound.

  25. Trish Says:

Hey, JC…I’m simply attempting to give Sherri tips on what to do to pass the time away during this trial!! Who knows…maybe she’ll get sequestered! That’s sure to start a whole nother blog!!!
Sherri says: “Dear TW’s. I’m stuck inside this rat-infested Holiday Inn, forced to share a room with a smelly co-juror!” :)

  26. CT Says:

I watched “Into the Wild” a couple of weeks ago. Great movie. Girls Gone Wild wasn’t bad either.

  27. cirtnaT Says:

I hate to hijack the post… but, the trailer is spot on. The only thing missing is Eddie Vedder’s “Hard Sun”…

  28. Sherri Says:

Hijack away! Fine. After a long day in the courtroom, I’m going to rent the thing!

  29. cirtnaT Says:

    LOL… Enjoy! ;)

  30. sherri Says:

Wow, great movie, cirtnaT. Thanks for the suggestion.

It inspires me to try to lead a simplier life in a more pure search for truth. I won’t be burning money today, but I really think we probably all have too much stuff and occasionally become trapped by convention.

Love the revelations throughout…about happiness being shared and, “If you want something in life, reach out and grab it.”

  31. cirtnaT Says:

Cool! I knew you’d appreciate it… one who would be happier baggin’ groceries in Cheyenne, Wyoming… ;)

  32. Sherri Says:

cirtnaT, I know there’s a way…the question for me is one of my son’s dependency on my income for a while longer and that of courage…to up and go! But I’ve always heard it’s better to run toward something rather than away from something. And I’m still putting together my vision. Then, along the way, life happens..things and people come into play and your vision changes.

Ha! Like Casey says, “Mom, you’re goin’ way too deep!”

  33. turtle Says:

Always remember Sherri, things might look greener elsewhere, but it’s not the scenery is just different

  34. cirtnaT Says:

    Indeed.
