VICE president?
Barack O’Bama smokes. He’s admitted to the vice, saying he’s trying nicotine gum.
Maybe he needs to call my sister.
Suzie Talley is the only person I know who can quit vices faster than you’ll notice Kim Kardashian’s backside.
It’s been a month since Suzie gave up caffeine, sugar, alcohol and processed food…all at once. I tried that. I caved after two days (and at the begging of co-workers and The Boyfriend who said, “I liked the toxic Sherri”). I thought we’d never hear from Suzie again. I was wrong.
Have you tried to give up something? Are you up for the challenge? Here’s Suzie’s report:
‘”As my month long experiment ends…(no coffee-caffeine/sugar or alcohol/white or processed food) I highly recommend it!
At first, the caffeine withdrawal was awful. I almost felt sick for the first 2-3 days. This just confirmed to me that I was addicted to it. It was by far the hardest of all the things to give up.
Sugar was the second, but something really awesome happened. Before giving these things up, I felt roller coasters in my energy level throughout the day. On this experiment, my energy level is constant throughout the day. My 5:00 p.m. everyday blood sugar dip went away as well. This was the most amazing. For example, this morning I got up at 6, went to gym and lifted weights, washed Scott’s car, cleaned out the garage and was on the phone by 9:00 for my first conference call. At noon, rode my bike for an hour and 15 minutes and will do a run after work today. My energy level is amazing now!!
Giving up alcohol had some effect on me. My resting HR in the morning is 40 bpm. At night after dinking wine, it was 55 bpm. So no more heart racing which I attributed to alcohol.
I also noticed I sleep like a truck. No waking up in the middle of the night and when I do wake up at 6 a.m., I am really up.
At first life seemed rather bland without my vices to spice things up, but after about 3 weeks, other things took their place, like the spike in my energy level. I have felt the best I have ever felt. I lost only 5 pounds, but weight loss was not my goal.
I can’t say I will give these things up for life, but it was a cool way of getting to know your body better.”

I tried to give up coffee once. I was a holy terror. But with a little encouragement from friends and family, I got back on the caffeine wagon.
I blame Starbucks for my addiction.
Can I sue?

Sherri - why are you looking at Kim Kardashian’s backside?
May 29th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Wait just a minute, Trish! That, from someone who thinks Rachael Ray was hotter than her stove in the day!
May 29th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
A possible president who smokes? I LOVE IT!
Let’s just hope he doesn’t leave a cigarette burn in someone’s blue dress.
May 29th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Yes. I DID say Rachael Ray was hot. But, I STILL wasn’t looking at her BOOTY! BTW - you FAILED to answer the question…..why are you looking at K-K’s backside?????

I gave up alcohol 4 years ago next month with no help and the two packs of cigarettes a day habit that went with the beer. The cigarettes I struggled to quit but I also have started a high fiber diet so I have given up processed bread and sugars and it is great, haven’t felt this good in a long time.

Giving up alcohol and cigarettes at the same time! That must have taken a ton of willpower!

I gave up bbq one time. One of the worst days of my life.
May 30th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
The alcohol I quit cold turkey and tried to do so with the cigarettes but it took me a while to give them up. But I consider myself a pretty strong willed person and having something control my life was not something I was willing to let happen. I never did meetings or anything like that, just quit, best decision of my life.

First, how fab to hear from Craig Day! Suzie and Ken, totally admire you. Had to give up caffeine once for medical reasons and was miserable and it’s hard work for me to give up wine for a week. You guys has guts!
May 30th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
SAL..I seem to recall when you gave up MEAT. As I am sure Craig Day would agree with me…life ain’t worth livin’ if there’s not a dead animal to throw on the grill.
May 30th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Preach it, Colleen!
May 30th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
I cut down on crack a little.
May 30th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
CT says he cut back on crack…but I saw him freebasing in the control room just this afternoon.
As for myself, I have never quit anything, except a bunch of jobs, school a few times, releationships, exercise, wearing a Speedo (don’t worry guys, that was only temporary), giving blood…you get the picture.

Wow, Colleen, Craig, Melissa! Feels like the newsroom years ago. Yes, CWA, I remember my vegetarian years. I just need to give up giving stuff up. CWA, I remember sitting at my desk and looking up at you about to take a bite out of an apple. You said, “Look, SAL, pesticides!”
Ken and Suzie are not genetically composed like the rest of us. That has to be the case. Seriously, everyone I know who has successfully given up something says they feel great.
Speaking of Craig Day, Craig…awesome story!
