To the beat of a different time

I’m somehow drawn to this and can’t get enough.  Thanks, CT, for the link.  Watch through the drummer, at least.

See, that very much reminds me of New Orleans.

  2. tommy Says:

  3. tommy Says:

  4. CT Says:

I have always loved this song but I just found the video tonight. Those guys are cool.

  5. rt Says:

I know this is crazy but every time I see an old video like this my first thought is always: “I wonder if these people are dead.”

Thanks for the heads up on Morello being alive. I guess the others are dead though.

  6. LindsAY Says:

I have ALWAYS love this piece of music (”Take Five”). Yes, I’m an old soul.

It’s now stuck in my head…I’m having ANOTHER party in my head, Talley. Thanks.

    loveD

Love the music, can listen to it all day. The musicality is what is missing in current music. Somehow the free form all blends together.

  9. Todd Says:

I love this type of music, it’s very hard to find it on the radio. I’ve heard the npr station late in the evening spinning big band/swing and jazz.

  10. rt Says:

I googled about ‘dead musicians’ and it seems only the horn player from this video has died. The rest of them are in their 80’s and still alive!

What’s the deal with my obsession about this?

  11. Sherri Says:

    Nice research, rt.

I’m now officially addicted to this post. When I have a moment, I click on it over and over again. I wish I were back there in time. Help me.

Today, I emailed Joe Morello, the drummer. I’m sure he’ll respond immediately :). I welcomed him to comment on this post.

  12. George Says:

Love that music. Great job RT.

Here is one I grew up with (listening to my mom play the album on her “hi-fi” console stereo)!!!! Brings back awesome childhood memories — I love it. Also know Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers working on the re-mix of this - ok, maybe not. Anyway - enjoy!!!!

Just listned to/watched that, George. Here’s the thing. That makes me cry. Not because it’s sad or sappy or from old time, but because it reminds me of happy times. As it should be. And here’s the challenge to you and me and our peeps, George…what will make our kids cry?

  14. George Says:

Agree Sher - that takes me back to the 60’s and reminds me of the Beaver Cleaver days when we were kids and everything was simple. We played in the street till our moms threatened us, drank water from the neighbors hose pipe and listened to the star spangled banner on tv at night before the network stopped for the evening (remember “white noise” on tv.

Interesting - I just Googled him to see when this song was written/released (it was 1960), but did not know he was born in Shreveport and played at the LA Hayride.

What makes our kids cry - take their dang cell phone away….

I miss the local station sign off after the late late show. I remember the one from Channel 6 in the late 70’s or early 80’s. They played American Trilogy by Elvis with a video of some Louisiana scenery and then the announcer said something about their broadcast tower in Mooringsport. Once they played the test pattern with the continuous beep it was time to go to bed.

Now we get all night infomercials instead. Who really needs to buy a Shamwow at 3am?

  16. rt Says:

CT, the sign off was actually on KTBS and was performed by Mickey Newbury from his album “Frisco Mabel Joy.”

I have the album we used to make that sign off in my desk drawer at work. I still get calls to this day asking for a copy of that.

  17. CT Says:

Sorry rt, I had my stations mixed up. Do you still have a tape of that sign off? You should post it on youtube if so. I’ll bet a lot of people would like to see that again. What years did KTBS run that?

  18. CT Says:

    YES! Thats it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiTjElq5Xjs

  19. LindsAY Says:

“TAKE FIVE” SHOULD BE THE SHERRITALLEY.COM THEME SONG! Is there any way you can automatically get it to play when users access the homepage?

  20. Mel Says:

I feel like I should be in a smokey bar sipping a martini.

  21. LindsAY Says:

I feel like that every night.

  22. tommy Says:

summer time blues by blue cheer
note the drummer 30 sec or so into the vid….

  23. LindsAY Says:

Sher…you need to have people vote on a “theme song”.

My vote is for Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves of course. :)

  24. rt Says:

CT, I want to say mid to later 70’s well into the 80’s but can’t be sure.

I was just told we may still have that in our server somewhere. It was on an old two inch tape and those tapes and decks went out years ago. I thought I kept a one inch copy but now that format has gone away here at our station.

    Still have the album though.

  25. LindsAY Says:

I take it back…I vote for this:

Have you ever noticed, the better blog posts tend to have a longer “shelf life”. People keep posting day-after-day on them. This one seems to be approaching it’s end, as no one has posted since 7:27 last night, and it’s 2:45 in the afternoon now. I really hate that, because, like Sherri, this is one I could come back to again and again.
I have never been a music student, but I will be forever a student of music. (Please don’t make me explain the difference.) I am also a musician, and I am convinced that Dave Brubeck’s level of musical genius rivals that of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Lennon/McCartney.
I have always been enomored with this song especially, as it incorporates the difficult, awkward and unique rhythm of the 5/4 time signature. He also wrote several pieces in 7/4, which is equally as difficult, awkward and unique.
Great stuff STDC! Glad you posted it!
(By the way, “1961 was a very good year”!)

  28. LindsAy Says:

HRB, you wanna come over here and say that to my face?!

  29. Ted Says:

THat is awesome. We have a pretty cool music scene starting up here in Texarkana. We even have a jazz club, “Skyward” downtown. It’s really exciting to hear that kind of music played live.

  30. Sherri Says:

Ted, tell us more about your gig!

  31. Ted Says:

Wow, I just saw this! Sorry I’m so late! I play guitar for a band called Ms. Mac & The Groovetones. Lot’s of 70’s and 80’s rock, we have a really incredible woman who sings and plays bass. It’s a lot of fun. My real passion though is for blues and blues based rock. I might have to put together another blues band.

  32. ken Says:

    rt,
did you ever find out if you did indeed have a copy of that sign off video? I have been looking for it for years. It truly brings back some great memories.
