Time to Firecracker 5K!
So, I’m in the ER today in a hospital gown and a male nurse says to me, “Hey! You doing the Firecracker 5K in the morning?” I paused and said, “I might sit this one out…you know, since I’m here and all..you know, like, right now and stuff…and all.” I didn’t know how to respond, so in my search for the right words, somehow I came out with Valley Girl lingo. But who can fault the guy for asking a question to which the answer is obvious…This guy rides his bike to work! He can do no wrong.Â
Anyway, this is an awesome race/run/healthwalk! All the proceeds go toward the American Cancer Society. It’s become such a cool tradition here. Some 3500 people show up and crowd the streets of South Highlands.  Sportspectrum’s goal:  more than 4,000 participants tomorrow!
The details: It starts at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot of Mall St. Vincent. If you aren’t already registered, it’ll cost you $20. Great t-shirt, great post-race party, great cause! For more details, go to www.sportspectrumusa.com. Â
Got peeps in town? Get ‘em up early and go meet your neighbors.Â
KTBS 3 Meteorologist Joe Haynes came in 17th last year! The first 100 males and first 60 females get cool beer mugs. I have two in my freezer from previous races. This is an event that’s fun to watch, run or walk.Â
Happy 4th of July!

G, we need a post-race/mug report. Did you hear how many people were there?

Sher, it just shows you’re so “all that” that even an ER run doesn’t stop you from racing. Hope you feel better.

Great plan, G and George!
Thanks, Mel! Sorry to say my little appearance in the ER did keep me from racing this morning. But I haven’t raced in a while…just run for fun and try to promote the races.
G, just checked, results aren’t in, yet. How did you, George and Joe do?

Sher,
Great time for all and great crowd. Our whole family (kids, dawgs and daughters boyfriend do this every year). G finished 64th (19:52) and Big Joe right behind G (19:56) in 65th place. George did not make the top 101 and I could not find any little kid to beat up to take his mug. Ran mile one hard and was on “mug pace”, but knew I would blow a gasket if I continued - so backed off and waited for 14 yr old son and paced him to new 5k PR for him (23:15) - won’t be able to beat him next year.
Sher - remember my daughter’s Bijon - Snuggles?? Here is pic of Snuggles on the Shreveport times website!! (Snug ran the whole way)!!

Look at Snuggles!
Congrats on your son’s PR. Ha…whenever I see I’m not having a stellar race, I find a kid mid-race to encourage on the way in. It’s a good way to still have a great race!

Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s just hope all the kids in Shreveport don’t start PR’ing at every race!!!!!!!!

what George did not mention is that Joe carried me on his shoulders the whole run and then hurled me at the finish line as he rounded the corner… is the only reason we didn’t have the same time. The foam in my beer mug was good.
