Sow Fresh!

Ever been to Ed Lester Farms in Coushatta, Louisiana?  The farmer’s market was just featured in Southern Living magazine.  Go, and you’ll see why.

The produce was hours, some minutes, fresh and still had the dirt on it!

It’s open six days a week.  We just went south from Shreveport on LA 1 and hung a left at Armistead.  The farm’s two miles down on your right.  What a great way to support area farmers and enjoy really fresh food.

    I love some fresh produce.

  3. Mel Says:

First, why wasn’t I invited over to dinner and second, I’m curious to know if Hazel and Jimmy get carsick?

  4. Sherri Says:

Mel, you have an open invitation and you know this, man!

Thanks for being such an appreciative dinner guest, Jay!

My favorite dinner moment from last night: Watching my son’s friends’ faces and they stared in bewilderment at the big oil painting of Hazel and Jimmy. It was as if they were afraid to ask.

Freak ass baby cutouts are wack.

  6. Jody Says:

    Sher-
Will you teach me how to cook after you teach me how to exercise?

  7. Sherri Says:

    Ha…they love you, too, HRB!

Are you sure, Jody? Remember when you came over and I served you nachos and coffee?

  8. Sherri Says:

Just made a snack and it needs something…can’t figure it out. What do you think? —cilantro, a spicier pepper???

    Here, taste it:
    Sauted in olive oil…
    Onion and garlic
Corn off the cob, tomato, (Ed Lester’s farm)
Okra, red onion (Celeste Lewis’ garden)
    Aneheim pepper
    Orange bell pepper
    Organic black beans
Salt, pepper and ground cumin to taste

Don’t even try to add anything to the evil oatmeal, white chocolate, berry cookies I just made. Just…someone come get them, please!

  9. Miss Piggy Says:

I see how you roll Ms Talley, put up at the top, “SOW FRESH” and not one mention of moi or any other beautiful swine? Only the dirty “fresh” veggies!

  10. Sherri Says:

Wait! Lime juice? Hold on a sec….um…not so much. Nevermind.

  11. Sherri Says:

Miss Piggy, we did have steaks on the grill with all that fresh vegetable stuff. ‘Course that’s still nothin’ for a fresh pig. Sorry.

  12. Miss Piggy Says:

appology partially accepted… please don’t be jealous of moi dirty blonde shoulder length locks…

I will totally accept the appology if Kermy and I are invited to dinner. We do want to visit with your green porch friends, so precious the way they hug.

  13. Sherri Says:

Miss Piggy, your awkwardness adds to your hilarity.

  14. Miss Piggy Says:

  15. Sherri Says:

Secret sauce for your steaks and/or vegs….I don’t give this to just anybody.

    Red Chile Sauce:
    2 tablespoons canola oil
1 large red onion, coarsely chopped
    3 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
2 New Mexican red chiles, lightly toasted
    2 quajillo chiles, lightly toasted
    1 ancho chile, lightly toasted
6 to 8 cups homemade chicken stock
    1/4 cup creme fraiche
    2 tablespoons maple syrup
    Salt and freshly ground pepper
Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until soft. Add the chiles and stock, and bring to a simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the chiles are soft. Transfer the mixture to a food processor and process until smooth.
Strain the mixture into a saute pan that has been set on high heat for a few minutes, and cook the sauce until slightly thick. Remove from the heat and stir in the creme fraiche and maple syrup. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

    Well done, Boyfriend.

HRB…You are my cooking hero, as you taught me how to make my first omlet! This rocks, ALMOST as sharing where the next great oil/natural gas find will be! Thanks for sharing the resources! I was salivating just reading your recipe!

    –Your sis

  20. Mel Says:

Oh how I love purple hull peas. When I was little we went with my grandparents to buy all their fruits and vegetables fresh and there was always some form of pig in the veggies, delish! I never did grow to like figs though.

  21. HRB Says:

Cook a good filet mignon. Melt a peice of goats cheese on top and drizzle with the above suace….you will not need to have sex for a week.

  22. Sherri Says:

Apparently, with the near birth of your son, this recipe didn’t work for you!

  23. HRB Says:

Yea, haven’t made it in a while. Had to lay off while we were trying to conceive.

  24. Sherri Says:

    What a testimony!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Ken Says:

Where is the best farmers market here in Shreveport/Bossier?

  26. sherri Says:

Ken, I know there’s the one downtown that’s open on Saturday and Tuesday mornings (I think from 7-noon). I don’t know if there are any others or which is the best. Ed Lester farms features produce from surrounding farmers. The watermelons are from Saline.

  27. PK Says:

If you are ever in Natchitoches on a Saturday morning, they have a nice farmers market. It is called cane river green market and I believe they have a web site.

  28. Sherri Says:

    Thanks, PK. Here you go.
