MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said.

A car plows into a crowd of bicyclists participating in a race on a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.
A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.
Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.
Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.
Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

Anyone remember when this happened to local attorney and triathlete Brian Cowan? Hit by a driver so drunk, Cowan was pounding on his windshield with him on the car and the guy stil wouldn’t stop. It’s amazing Cowan’s alive.

Yep Sher - Believe Brian got hit from behind, was flipped over the cab of the pick-up truck and landed in the back bed of the truck. So, like you say, the drunk driver is driving off with Brian in the back of the truck beating on the window!!!!!!! Guess that really blows the plan to just drive off??????? Think Brian may have had a beer with the guy while he was driving around???

It’s truly amazing there was only one casualty in that ordeal. I especially like the part where the men were trying to lynch Campos before the police arrived.
Talk about frontier justice.

Hmmmm…WRyker, reminds me of another frontier justice story where a group of local runners allegedly took a situation with an beligerent, irratic driver into their own hands (and feet). No need to name names…anyone know the story?

And yes…a closed course is vital for safety! Suzie (my Chuck Norris-like sister) had a wreck because of a car during a tri that was supposed to be sanctioned. She broke her pelvis and arm…got back on the bike, transitioned to the run, ran a mile, then an EMS unit picked her up. Later, the doctors were filing into her hospital room, wanting to see the woman over 40 who ran a mile on a broken pelvis.

I can’t say that I’ve heard the story, although it sounds like a good one.

Maybe George or Joe Haynes…even G can help us out here?
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Yes G- Do tell?!
June 3rd, 2008 at 7:55 pm
I would say the molds were definitely broken after people like Suzie, and The Hoyts’ went through the Play-Do factory. Some people struggle just to get out of bed, where for others there are no boundaries and show us mere mortals that anything is possible.

I agree, WRyker. I’m a struggler…but am soooo inspired by the Suzie Talleys and Team Hoyts….and all the people I meet in doing my Miracle stories, who deal with struggles in a way to which I aspire.
I really think that if you’re dealt a really tough blow in life, how you deal with it…or what you make of it (this can be very creative) can define you in your value to your fellow man!
Look at all the Red River Triathlon competitors who came to the aid of Antonio Roggero this weekend when he had heart failure during the race. They didn’t think twice about sacrificing their place in a race to help someone who was hurt.

I keep telling myself it’s only a test. How is Antonio Roggero?
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
ok… so it was an early Sun morn (normal 10 from the BK)… the drunk at 740ish in the morn nearly hits one of the gents minding his biz and has a choice gesture with the moron… the drunk stops backs up and gets in one of the guys faces. he is told to get back in the car after some more words and kinda turns like he is gonna then takes a wild swing and misses… that is when the drunk somehow ended up with his tshirt over his head… you can guess what happened after that! George… feel free to elaborate! then you can we can talk about the idiot that pulled the gun on Roger last year on the Sunday morn run!
Tony is stable, he is responding to loud noises and moving his legs about… this afternoon I believe he was pulling at some lines. Time will tell the amount of O2 debt he suffered? He is hangin in there… just keep him in your thoughts and prayers!

Thanks, G. Our prayers are with Tony.

G - I missed the Sunday with the drunk driver. However, from what I understand, the drunk man (age late 40’s, bigger guy, from what I was told) was all up in the face of one of our younger guys - you know, one of those young skinny guys (i.e. - FAST skinny guys) - the driver guy just would not quit. So, I think one of our more mature members quickly stepped in and “encouraged” him to return to his auto and leave!!! Rick Flair (Wooooooooooooo) would have been proud!!!!

Riding on the SHOULDER (not even in the road)of Arthur Teague one Sunday - a brick flys by the side of me about the same time as a pick um up truck passes me with a bunch of rednecks (older teens to young 20’s in age)in the pickup bed hollering at me. Guess them rednecks don’t like us biker boys in our tight shorts!!!
Seriously, I cannot believe anyone would EVEN consider throwing a brick at someone riding a bike on the side of the road (especially out of a moving vehicle going 50 - 60 mph) - even a bunch of “Larry - the Cable Guy” lookin group of guys.

the mature guy is not always that mature! the younger guy did recall his soccer days in defending his fathers honor… we are going to get killed one day with all the friends we have made during these runs!
on a different note, my daughter had a very nice dinner with a bunch of pro golfers this afternoon evening in Memphis! think she scored a few hats and some autographs

Yet another reason for me to stay in my car. My sister lives in Austin and even though they have marked bike routes on the roads where she lives, bikers have been whacked by side mirrors on SUV’s. WILD!
June 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I got clipped by a side mirror once. That smarts.
