Play Ball!
Opening Day. The official game is Arizona at Cincinnati on March 31 at 1:20 p.m. ET.Â
Questions: Has the steroid scandal fouled up your anticipation of this season? Why don’t more people go to Shreveport Sports games? What do you like about the sport? Â
I still love the aesthetics of baseball. I like the smell of the park, the sound of the bat, the way the breeze feels at Fair Grounds Field.Â
Although I’m no expert on stats and steroids, I (bragging alert!) can identify many MLB parks by the color of the dirt and the way the grass is mowed. I like Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix (Chase Field now?), with it’s seven blends of grass and high-speed retractable roof. There’s nothing like being in Wrigley Field. I like the way Jacob’s Field is angled. I like the simplicity of the Yank’s uniforms and the passion of their fans.  But I love the Braves!Â
My son is an Orioles fan, but I forced the Braves on him one 4th of July. There’s just something about John Smoltz closing. This summer, he’ll be the club house manager for The Shreveport Sports. Not John Smoltz, Casey Allen. :)Â
When I was a kid, I kept score for $8.00 a game at American Legion games. Sister Suzie was the only girl to make the Little League All-Star Team. That’s when I became a fan. You? Â

I like the movie The Sandlot. You have WAY too many questions in your second paragraph for my ADHD. But the better title for this page might have been, “Do You Have the Balls”? Or something like that. This title sounds like you asked S.A. or something.

Baseball rules! I live and die with the Braves every season as well and am interested to see how they do with this aging starting pitching staff, now that Tom Glavine, the Prodigal Son, has returned. I miss the confidence felt when Smoltzie came in to pitch the 9th and the failure to make the playoffs these past 2 years is in major part due to the lack of a reliable closer.
As far as the Sports, I just haven’t gotten into them. I really miss the days when FGF was new and was packed with fans. I miss the Captains. I haven’t yet forgiven Taylor Moore for selling them. I hope your son enjoys his summer job.
GO BRAVOS!

What do I like about baseball? To begin with….everything.
The Braves and I go way back….to the late 60s. As soon as I saw the field at Fulton County Stadium…I was probably about three…that’s when it happened for me. I am NOT a baseball snob. All the other sports are great(even hockey). But once baseball enters your bloodstream….
True fact:I was at Fulton County Stadium when Hank Aaron hit his 700th career HR….July 21, 1973. Most people know that he hit #715 off Al Downing of the Dodgers…but almost nobody knows that he hit #700 off George Brett’s brother Ken,who was a left-hander for the Phillies.(Sadly, Ken Brett passed away in the fall of 2003 at age 55.)
I agree with Win that college baseball is great. As much as I love March Madness, I think the College World Series in Omaha is an even better event. If they could just get rid of those aluminum bats.

Can we get some stats for Suzie Talley?
Batting average, HRs, RBI, SBs, OBP….
Chase Field gets extra points for the dirt strip running from home plate out to the mound….just like back in the day(as the young people say).

Um, Suzie’s in a …a…well, let’s just call it a little testing session. As soon as her results are back, we’ll release her stats. If they’re impressive.

I get it, but I’m a football guy, as is the other Talley brother. All pro and college sports are awesome. When on vacation in Italy, I heard a man say “Here, family is first, then community, then country……and then soccer.”

Love to go to the ballpark, soak up the sun, have a beer or two and a bag of peanuts. What better way to spend a summer night? Loved the Captains and went often but when Moore sold them and the name was changed to Swampdragons (swampdragons??) I lost interest. Go Mudbugs!!!

bc317: I’m with you on the aluminum bats!
What is it the Mudbugs are doing that works? Their fans are so loyal it hurts. Look at the attendance! Anything The Shreveport Sports could do to bring back fan numbers from the days of The Captains?

Good looking bat girls!

I don’t know what the Sports can do to turn things around. An average gate of 1,300 is not good in an area the size of Shreveport/Bossier. Maybe Big M should be the new special assistant to the general manager.
As for the Mudbugs, I have no clue. Never in a million years did I think there would BE a hockey team in S’port/Bossier, much less that it would average 4,500 fans per game.

Mudbugs successful as it can be a great family outing - only in Shreveport/Bossier can a dad, mom and their children stand up, beat on the glass like wild people, get a $6 beer (or is it $8 - I’ll have to ask my son) and holler “Ref, YOU SUCK” in unison!!!
