Houston, we have a hurricane.
“We went to the grocery store and it was total mayhem. All canned goods and bread were gone. People were freaking out. We got some microwave popcorn and peanut M&Ms and got the hell out of there.   There is an eerie feeling, like Christmas morning except windy and hot.”Â

HRB you guys have a generator?….dig in good luck…fire stations are places to seek shelter or help or info…stay in contact with your older sister so she doesnt worry some much about Team Talley in Texas.
September 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Chuck Norris will deflect the hurrican around my house.
September 12th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I saw a dude on the corner selling a brand new generator, estimated vaule $200. His sell price was $1000. Is that legal. I wanted to stop and tell him I would not kick his ass for $1200, but my wife strongly discouraged it.
September 12th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Haa…thanks for keeping us informed, HRB! What’s the weather like right now?
September 12th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
calm and cloudy.
September 12th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Not for long, Bro!
September 12th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
I know. It’s track is heading right over my house. Just updated to within 1mph of a cat. 3. It’s gonna be a windy night.
September 12th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Keep us posted. I know authorities were advising people in Houston to stay put because more lives were lost last time around in the evacuation process than in the actual city.
All of us Talleys (and probably more) are praying for you and Kimmy and your new baby still to come. Stay safe.
September 12th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Hazel and jimmy were spotted in the surf at Galveston with their social security #s written on their arms. They are dead. Now you need a new tagline for your site.
September 12th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa…that’s the best case ever for changing my tagline !!!!
September 12th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Starting to get some good gusts here in Tomball, TX. Blowing the patio furniture around. I don’t think anyone is watching ST.com though.
September 12th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
They’re all at the grocery store. I saw them there.
September 12th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Hurrican Sherri, all wind but no damage.
September 12th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Tomball, Texas??????…………sounds like the coolest place on earth!
September 12th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
It is the coolest place on earth…if you’re into walmarts, nascar, and car dealerships that are blowin’ the roof off high city prices. Average education level is 2nd grade. Official language is Texmex. But, where else in the Houston area can you still get land.
September 13th, 2008 at 12:04 am
i am so into nascar !!!!(really) my inner redneck compels me.
2nd grade education….sounds like one of the women i married….but we still communicated.
September 13th, 2008 at 2:32 am
Tommy you were made for Tomball… Come on over son.
September 13th, 2008 at 10:09 am
HRB, what’s happening now? Do you have power? I hear the Mayor saying you need to boil water. HOpe you have something to wash down the popcorn and M&M’s.
September 13th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Someone make it stop raining.
September 13th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
I have to say the responses to this are great! The blog sounds all to familiar (moved to the Arklatex from Florida) so I knew what to expect. However, I also know what “blowing the roof of high city prices” sounds like. So today as I am “hunkered down” I’m listening to my buddies at KILT in Houston and I’m thankful for being inland!
September 13th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
I think there should be a moratorium on any media use of the phrase “hunkered down” from this point on. I got very tired of it during Katrina and Rita and now, after Gustav and Ike, well, it’s been run into the ground.
123,000 people without power but my nephew bought the LSU game and is having steamed shrimp, beer and the works so I guess I’ll brave the weather driving out to his place. Hopefully, we won’t lose power. If so, we can just hunker down, I guess, lol.
Y’all have a great evening! Geaux Tigers!
September 13th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
MaryS910, just want you to know now that I’m off my 14 hour webcam shift (which I loved) and I know my son in Ruston and my brother, his wife and my yet-to-be born nephew in Houston are okay, I’m hunkered down for the night at home.
September 14th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Sherri,
What a great service for the community! I saw the cable/web cast several times during the day
so I could keep up with local activity. It was very informative as well as entertaining. You conducted the show with great authority and charm without losing your confident smile while balancing the continuous action occurring around you. A class performance as always!
Thank you for giving up your Saturday for the entire area.
Sam

Chuck Norris …. Thats classic.
September 14th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Chuck Norris ruled. I saw him our neighborhood deflecting the storm. Looks like all we have is some limbs down.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Thank you Sam. Few things bring me more joy than to be able to work with such a hard-working, innovative team to provide a service like this.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:34 am
Mel, HRB, when he wasn’t deflecting the storm, Chuck Norris was in the newsroom helping us with the webcam.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Power is back on in the Talley house in Houston. No cable tv though, so no football. It’s still raining too. Able to use the blackberry for a computer modem. The only contact I had with the outside was sherri’s web cast yesterday. Was very grateful for that entertainment and information. AC rocks.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:43 am
HRB, wow…that was fast! So glad you guys are safe. Thanks so much for being our Houston connection during the storm yesterday on the webcam/chat.
September 14th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Marybr549: To hunker is to take shelter. Funny sounding word, but we’ve done a lot of it lately here in Houston. I can’t think of a better word to describe it.
September 14th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Sherri, great job yesterday. You gave more info than anyone. Even though I was without power and still am, I was watching by a generator. Next time I will send you a Starbucks coffee traveler to the news station with lots of Splenda
September 14th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Thanks, turtle! Could have used coffee at about hour 12.
September 14th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Great job Sher - you and your associates were awesome!! Also saw lots of Sher / glasses comments - maybe a new look???
Latte’
September 14th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Haaa…I couldn’t see the glasses comments because those were cheap magnifying glasses from Drug Emporium. I grab them to read small print. Ha…I heard there were Sarah Palin references!
September 15th, 2008 at 8:42 am
HRB- Hunker is when a really cute, buff guy takes shelter from a storm.
September 15th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Ha…..Suzie!
September 15th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Funny Suzie.
September 15th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Sherri, I saw one of your former co-anchors on MSNBC this morning. Charles Hadlock is in TX covering the aftermath of IKE…I had forgotten about him but recognized his voice even before I saw his face. Isn’t that funny? Hope you are well ST!
September 15th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Yeah…we try to stay up with Charlie and catch some time with him when he breezes through town. He’s perfect for the storm stuff!
Doin’ well, Bobby, thanks. I hope the same for you! Thanks for checking in here..hope you’re come back often.
September 15th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Thanks George and others..on the webchat experience! Randy Bain. Brad Pollitt and everyone else at KTBS! Love it when a good team comes together!
September 16th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Hell is no power, no water (well requires electricity), a crappy radio that fades in and out of the LSU game, and a constipated invalid to take cafe of. I’m so getting Ex-lax and a generator.
By the way, why must all talking heads venture out in hurricanes wearing the obligatory logo-ed ballcap and windbreaker? It’s just so chiché! I would still watch if they stayed indoors, and respect them more for their common sense.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Big Daddy…I know and I’m guity of it! During Ivan, I wore an ABC Sports ballcap (alternated between that and a Nike cap..all I owned) to keep the wind from actually blowing the hair off my head. However, I was already on the road back then and didn’t know I’d be covering Ivan, so no logo on the windbreaker picked up from Wal Mart at the last minute. Nice topic idea…think I’ll run with it…thanks!
