Crazy ’bout a Mercury

stuff-002.jpg

This was LindsAy’s first car.

Let’s do three firsts.  Your first car, first pet and first job.

My first car was a Mercury.  My first pet was Archie, a miniature dachshund.  For my first job, I worked as a maid in a motel in Upstate New York.

1st Car: ‘88 Mazda GLC (Good Looking Car)
    1st Pet: Pete the Parakeet
1st Job: Chuck E. Cheese game room attendant in EastGate Shopping Center

  2. cbp Says:

I don’t know what year the car was. Had to be earlier than ‘88 because I was married with children by then. The memory…

  3. HRB Says:

My first car was a chevy pickup my dad gave me. It was named “mr. pickup”. My first dog (as an adult) was Oscar the grouch…a Lasa Opsa, aptly named. First job was a lifeguard. I wish I had made a career out of that….not a bad job really.

  4. Bruce Says:

Those candy cars make me laugh every time I see them!

    Car: Mazda Protege 5
Pet: it was a dog named biscuit, it was golden like a biscuit, so I named it that, I don’t remember what type of dog.
Job: I worked in a copy that made and sold fishing lures. I handled all the dealer accounts.

  5. LindsAY Says:

Ok, is this supposed to be like your “stripper name?” First car+first pet+first job

Therefore, mine is “Blazer Crackers KTBS”

  6. LindsAY Says:

And Sher, that’s not my car…it’s T-Bone’s! Get it? “Reece’s”?!?!

  7. sherri Says:

cbp: I was Promotional Coordinator for Chuck E. Cheese’s in Eastgate in 1982-83. Did we work together?

  8. HRB Says:

I’d drop the KTBS and just go with “Blazer Crackers”. It has a nice ring to it.

  9. cbp Says:

Well, probably so. I also would don the Chuck E. Cheese costume for special events. If you ever got a token stuck in a video machine, I was keeper of the key that unlocked it and then I would (usually) give you your token back. I was also proficient at skeeball!

  10. cbp Says:

sherri, are you the one that booked Chuck E. for all of those lame public appearances?

  11. Sherri Says:

Yes, I booked Chuck E., Jasper T. Jowls and Mr. Munch for appearances. I, too, had to sometimes be Chuck E. Remember how kids used to pull Chuck E.’s tail all the time back then? Notice how he doesn’t have a tail now. Wonder if it was phased out or if he got too close to the pizza slicer.

  12. cbp Says:

I couldn’t stand to be around kids for a LONG time after I worked there.

  13. Colleen Spillane Says:

Gee and I felt bad about having to dress up in black polyester pants and stand in the middle of the mall on a saturday offering people “a delicious sample of our Chick-Fil-A nuggests”. At least i didn’t have to dress up as a giant rodent! Thanks Sherri Talley.com. My life is lookin’ better already. What can you do about other painful memories..like say…oh Jason Weimar’s voice!

  14. LindsAY Says:

Oh my God. I have this videotape of me when I was little hugging Chuck E. Cheese at the Chuck E. Cheese on Youree Drive!

If you guys saw me there, I was the cute girl with the big brown eyes and the dancing ringlets that was probably hugging you (AKA-Chuck E. Cheese)

  15. LindsAY Says:

And once AGAIN, this post has gone waaay too far off topic.

    But…

Here is a list of all the Chuck E. Cheese “characters” and they’re bios/pics! Good times!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chuck_E._Cheese’s_characters

  16. HRB Says:

We should change your name to ‘Mrs. Blazer cheese n’ crackers.

  18. jj Says:

    lindsAy…was crackers a dog a parrot or a big rat ?

  19. LindsAY Says:

It was a Springer Spaniel I think. I couldn’t say “Crackers” so I said “Crackies”.

  20. rt Says:

LindsAY you said: “I was the cute girl with the big brown eyes” You have high self esteem don’t you? What’s that like?

  21. Ann Says:

1st pet: dog name strek (don’t know what kind)
1st job: Hamel’s amusement park (good times)

  22. LindsAy Says:

    rt, I’m just being honest.

You know you’re 100% totally in love with me.

    Don’t deny.

  23. LindsAy Says:

And rt, I said I WAS….WAS the cute girl with the big brown eyes.

    WAS cute. WAS.

I still have big brown eyes though…at least my left one.

  24. CT Says:

    1st Car: ‘76 Mercury Capri
1st Pet: Hamster (forgot his name)
1st Job: Shreve City Driving Range. I drove a tractor and picked up golf balls.

  25. cbp Says:

CT, OMG I used to play putt-putt golf there!
LindsAy, if you got knocked down by Chuck E.’s tail, then yes, we saw you. It was just so hot inside that fur…it made you do things you wouldn’t normally do…like step on small children. Sorry.

  26. LindsAY Says:

I didn’t get knocked down, gurl. Nor knocked “up”…

  27. LindsAY Says:

Yes, I call EVERYONE gurl. I don’t care if you’re male or female, gurl.

P.S.-I’m making fun of the whole “callin’ people “girl” thing”…I HATE it.

  28. Mel Says:

First car I drove was my Dad’s old Ford Falcon but my first car which I shared with my sister was a bright green Datsun B-210 with black interior and no air conditioning. It did have a radio.

First pet: Jingles the cocker spaniel that we got on Christmas Eve

First real job: Working at Pou, Quinn, Watkins and Thornton. I even got a date with one of the patients!

  29. CT Says:

LindsAY’s first car was pretty sweet, but it needs bigger rims.

    Sherri, check this out.

  30. charlesm Says:

that was an awesome car ct. how many of ya’ll did that pass down from?

  31. sherri Says:

charlesm: On the NSU campus, I remember being met with another vehicle in my lane, having to swerve and crash the yellow Capris into a tree. Loved that car. Stick shift. Sporty for its time. Don’t even remember the sibs’ experiences. HRB, CT, Suzie? Who drove it?

  32. CT Says:

I drove it the first year that I had my license. I’m pretty sure Suzie and HRB did too. My friends called it “The Banana”. I loved that car.

  33. George Says:

1st car - 1968 Chevy Impala (grecian green)

1st pet - Snoopy (real orignal name) - Dachshund

1st job - LA State Dept of Education - Textbook Depository (big warehouse). We were responsible for all schoolbooks (grades 1-12), INCLUDING TEACHERS EDITIONS. This fringe benefit came in real handy during my 11th and 12th grade years. All the real smart girls in Bookkeeping/Accounting classes (cuz there were only about 2 guys) always wondered why I got straight A’s on all my homework.

First real non W-2 job was selling programs at LSU football games - did this for about 4 seasons as a kid.

CT - my 2nd car was a 1977 Capri with the 2.8 liter engine w/ 4 speed and I loved it. Car survived getting crushed underneath the Racetrack gas station on Old Minden Road during the 1978 Bossier tornado (I was inside paying when it hit the station and girlfriend sitting in the car) - Sher, think Joe Haynes told my tornado story one nite when he broadcast the weather from the new convention center. 80

Mel - Pou, Quinn, etal. is one of my current customers now - really great folks.

  34. jj Says:

wow george that same tornado’s last stop was way out at bodcau/old cotton valley road where me a sister and mom and dad were laying next to my grandfathers big white cadallic we made it but alotta other stuff didnt…the caddy took a pine tree…we crawled out from under allthat….30yrs since that twister

  35. George Says:

jj, sounds like you guys very lucky too!!

My girlfriend and I drove back from Christmas Lights in Natchitoches so I could drop her off at NSU Nursing school dorm and return to NSU campus next day. We got into town and rented room at hotel across street from the gas station on Old Minden Rd. After paying for room, we decided to cross street and get gas and candy bar before heading to room. Had no clue of tornado watch during the evening. While inside paying, all the lights in the whole area blew out and I heard the very loud “train sound” they speak of - in span of about 10 seconds, I realized we were in the middle of hell and grabbed the young pregnant gal working there (who had started crying) and pushed her to the floor and laid on top of her. Just as we hit the floor, the building was leveled, When the dust settled, we had to crawl out on our stomachs - the big covering/roof to the gas station pumps had blown onto the hood of my car and my front bumper was pushed to the ground from the weight of the roof. My girlfriend (who was still in my Capri)was scared, but ok, and had the roof hit about 2 - 3 feet further back, she would have been in big trouble.

Man, talking about ruining a good eveing of drinking and hopeful fun nite with girlfriend. Oh, we used our hotel key to figure out where our room was and located it - glad we were not in there!!! The room would have been rockin’, but it would not have been because of me!!!

    A crazy evening…..

  36. jj Says:

is there a happy ever after and the girlfriend still around dodgein twisters and enjoying be Mrs.george…i love a happy endin…mom and dad and me and two sisters and a brother came back to all that nothing yrs later and rebuilt …mom still lives there

  38. jayteegee Says:

I also worked at Chuck E. Cheese in the summer and fall of 1983 and wore the Chuck E. costume as well as the Mr. Munch costume when I wasn’t cleaning tables or washing dishes.

On day I was in the Mr. Munch costume when a little boy looked up into the mouth and realized there was a person inside and not a monster. He proceeded to punch Mr. Munch in the stomach but the costume was a little big for me at the time. You probably don’t have to guess where the punch actually landed. Still kinda hurts to think about it.

I also remember Sherri driving us around in a Jeep while we were in costume to advertise the restaurant.

  39. sherri Says:

jayteegee: Wow! I still have a picture of you and ‘the others’ in the jeep. Will try to find it! That place was wildly popular. I know we scheduled more than 100 birthday parties a week for five weeks straight.

  40. Mel Says:

I don’t know how y’all did it. I think Chuck E. Cheese smells like feet!

  41. jj Says:

i remember when that place was crystal palace the arcade place with go-carts inside ….and going to the movies at east-gate

  42. sherri Says:

Eastgate was so cool back then.

  43. CT Says:

    Crystal Palace was awesome!
