Bring Us Your Queer Little Tunes

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

statue-of-liberty-1.jpgWe all know it.  You know it.  I know it.  But we don’t want to admit it.  It’s almost a dark secret.

As my son said to me when I was playing basketball with him once while I was still in a suit and all that TV makeup, “Be free, Mom!”

Bring us that song that comes on the radio that you quickly admonish in front of others, but deep down…it drives you.  You hear the beginning few licks and come alive!  You can hear it right now.  Yep…in your head .  But you wouldn’t dare tell anyone.

Because I don’t have the priviledge of anonymity anyway, I’ll throw three of mine out there.  Ready?

“Brandy” by Looking Glass

“My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison

“I Remember Finding Out About You” by Badfinger (okay, maybe that’s kind of cool)

Benefit for Buddy

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

I had the honor of interviewing blues greats Hubert Sumlin (Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, etc) and Buddy Flett (The Bluebirds) for a story that’ll air Monday night at 10:00 on KTBS.

Both men have been near death.  And I thank them for being so candid about what it’s taking to come back and how they’re using music as a vehicle and source of strength for that.

Buddy has had to learn to talk all over again after suffering from a rare brain inflammation.  Take a quick listen here and see how far he’s come in learning the music he once owned.

To help Buddy with his rehabilitation efforts, the Benefit for Buddy concert will be Sunday night at 7:00 at The Strand.  Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Sumlin and others will perform.  And Buddy’s planning on taking the stage.

Thanks, guys, for the inspiration to go on in the darkest and tougest of times.

Runnin’ on Empty

Time for new iPod music for running.  Any ideas for strong classic rock songs or anything else good for pacing?  What gets you going?
