To TV or not TV

movies.jpgThey tell me I’m on TV for a living, but I have no proof of that.

See, somehow, something happened to our satellite dish at the beginning of the summer and my son and I haven’t watched TV since.

All. Summer. Long.

We seized the opportunity.  Rented and bought movies with reckless abandon.  Sometimes, we’ll watch 3 or 4 in one day/night.

Independent films like ‘Little Miss Sunshine’.  Local films with friends in them like ‘You Better Run’.   The Doors.  Animal House.  Fight Club.  Hot Rod.  Meet Joe Black.  I Am Sam.  Billy Madison.  Raising Arizona.  Man on the Moon.  One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.  What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.  Tonight’s theatre presentation:  GoodFellas.

Only because it’s almost football season, I called the dish repairman.  Soon, we’ll be back in the world of television.  But, Casey and I will always remember this summer of movies.

Transformer spotted in Claiborne Parish

optimusjohndeere1.jpg

KTBS Photojournalist Casey Habich spied this transformer, Optimus John Deere, acting all unassuming on a farm in Claiborne Parish.

Moments after Habich snapped this shot, OJD transformed into an awesome farmbot with a real thick southern accent and began clearing the crops of nasty Deceptipests.

It was cool.

Awe!

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

ryanreynolds.jpgI was in a conversation about movies with a couple of guys who are funny and as heterosexual as can be.  Suddenly, when talk turned to certain male actors, I heard descriptions I’d never heard before and was momentarily puzzled.

So I fetched my Urban Dictionary (a friend to those of us who spend way too much time in Geekdom).

Aha!  Just what I thought:

Man crush:  When a straight man has a “crush” on another man, not sexual but kind of idolizing him.

Bromance:  Describes the complicated love and affection shared by two straight males.

I love these words!  They sort of make it cool and okay to break down those old social barriers that make it tough for men to express affection toward one another.

I think if I were a man, it would be tough for me not to have a man crush on Ryan Reynolds or Johnny Depp.  You?

opt.jpgOn the day I saw T2, I tried to buy an Optimus Prime t-shirt before the movie (weird alert), but they had only one at Target and it was a boy’s XS.  Sorry if you wanted that for your 5-year-old and I stretched it out trying to make it work.

My favorite part:  When Opt. (that’s what I call him at home) got the powers of the older and wiser former Decepticon-turned-good and became Prime Plus!  Then, butt kicking of ultimate proportions ensued!

The hottness factor of Megan Fix, I mean Fox, was enhanced technologically.  I’m not just sayin’ that cuz men find her attractive and I’m a female.  I’m sayin’ it cuz I’m a geek and I think it’s cool how they did it.  You’re old enough to Google the details.

The humor was excellent and somewhat subtle.

The mom was funny way beyond what she was in the first movie.

There was some love tension and humor.  I cried.

A really cool Palm Pre commercial ran in the previews.

I found myself sort of crushin’ on Bumble Bee, then remembered two things.  1)  In the heart of the crush world, Bee belongs to my cousin, Kristin, and my co-worker, Trish.  2)  I claimed loyalty to Opt. even before I saw him get stronger and save the world.  Now, there’s no goin’ back.

Transformers 2:  Revenge of the Fallen opens Wednesday, with the first showing at 12:01 a.m. There’s been much talk about Megan Fox being several percentage points hotter than in the first movie, more things exploding and additional FX.

Here’s a preview.  What do you think?

transformers_movie_41.jpgIf you share my affinity for Optimus Prime, you’ll be thrilled to know the new Transformers movie coming out this summer looks great!

An friend of mine who sweats cars sent me this link from Autoblog.  According to the author, someone secretly recorded the newest trailer at a special private screening yesterday and leaked it online.  I love that it wound up on a blog about cars.

Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen opens in theatres June 24th.

Frost/Nixon

Monday, January 12th, 2009

richardnixonfarewell.jpgHe said I was a pretty baby.

He lied.

VP Richard M. Nixon told my parents that when he was campaigning for president in 1960.  We were at the Smithsonian.  I was in the arms of Dan and Darlene Talley.

The truth:  I was actually the ugliest baby on the face of the earth.  When God was giving out tons of hair and odd-colored Shar Pei-like skin on babies, I was apparently first in line.  Dan Talley took one look at his firstborn and said, “Lord, I know she’s scary, but she’s mine and I’m gonna love her anyway.”

So, that’s my Nixon connection.  I really want to see this flick.  You?

I have a crush on a robot!

transformers_movie_4.jpgI didn’t even catch his name.

Accidentally watched the movie Transformers today and now I have an eternal, school girl crush on an Autobot.

I was asking the 7-year-old boy across the street, “Hey, Nathan!  Do you remember the name of the red and blue transformer..you know, the good guy?”  He mumbled something like…Optimum…something.  Dang it.  Why can’t kids speak up when you want them to?  What does Nathan know…he likes some of the Decepticons!  At least he told me I could get a t-shirt with the hero Autobot on it at WalMart in the boys dept.   I can’t get there fast enough.  I don’t guess they’ll have Mr. Compassionate-Sexxy-Autobot’s phone number sewn into the tag on the t.  Oh no, that would be waaaay too much to ask.  ‘09 was supposed to be my year!

What a cool movie with an awesome combination of humor, emotion and suspense.

Have you seen it?  What’s your favorite character?

Make it up - it’s the movies!

Um…well…uh, see… Sorry, having a tough time staying focused (next time, Sherri, write the copy, then post the picture!).  Okay, I have a relative with good intentions who keeps trying to fix me up with people.  So, I sent her this picture and told her I was spoken for.

If you were to do the same, who would you send?  Sorry to steal your man, here, LindsAy, but I knew you’d pick the guy in the previous post. :)
