travel_g_boston_740.jpgThe following are among the local athletes who competed in the 2008 Boston Marathon this morning.  Thanks to each of you for inspiring those of us who are coming back from injuries, those just discovering the joy of running and anyone trying to ‘go for it’ no matter what the endeavor.

I’d love to post your race experience.  Email me at stalley@ktbs.com and send a picture!  You had a lot of support back home.  Read on.

Congratulations!

Track ‘Em Down!

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

It’s the world’s oldest annual marathon.   Several runners in the ArkLaTex qualified this year for The Boston Marathon.    Joe Haynes (KTBS 3 Meteorologist) and Suzie Talley (former Shreveporter, commenter on this site, my sister) are among them.

The race begins Monday morning and you can track Joe and Suzie every 5K (3.1 miles via satellite chips on their ankles).  Here’s how:

Log in and enter their names or bib numbers.  The face of the Boston Marathon web site will change on race day (Monday) and the process on how to enter the search will be clear.

Joe is in Wave 1.  Start time: 10:00 a.m. EST–Enter either “Joesph Haynes” or bib # 4002
Suzie is in Wave 2.  Start time: 10:30 a.m.  EST–Enter either “Suzie Talley Moore” or bib # 15834

This is a tough 26.2 mile race!  How cool it’ll be for Joe and Suzie to read your words of encouragement.

During the race, HRB, CT and I will also jump in with comments under this post as we track Joe and Suzie live.  Join us!  It’s sort of like being there to cheer them on.   See you here for the race Monday morning.

There are no steroids in baseball. Just players Chuck Norris has breathed on.

When Chuck Norris does pushups, the earth moves.

In our media fitness competition on May 10th, we’ll be asked to do as many pushups (the male version) as we can in one minute.  I can do about two.  That’s two more than I could do last week.  Not exactly Demi Moore in G.I. Jane.  Go see how many you can do and tell us.  Onward!

This is me getting measured at the weigh-in for our media fitness competition.  As we continue training, I couldn’t help but notice the ample amount of confidence coming from The Times competitors.

RL3:  I know, let’s have a media softball game where you’re at bat.  You really want to get on base.  So, you step up to the plate and decide you’re going to slam it as hard as you can to the only girl on the other team (me, playing second base).  Then, I snag it on the hop and throw you out at first with enough time for you to stop and order a pizza before you get halfway down the baseline.  Oh, wait.  That already happened.

Is that all you got?  :)

How much can a girl take?

First, Roy Lang, from The Times, one of my fitness competitors, drives by when I’m running and tells me he’s off to a personal trainer.  Since I have a real job, all I have time for is a short run and a quick weight session in my garage.  And since I found out yesterday that we have to do the male version of pushups, I’m hurting right now.  But I’ll be ready on May 10th.

Roy is pictured above, flanked by The Times’ Val Horvath and Nishia Livingston.   “The News Team” can so take them.   And I don’t mean “The News Team” from the movie, Anchorman.

Then, as I begin to take a picture of my desk for “Jake”, my on-air makeup spills and laughter ensues from my co-workers, including executive producer Clay Kirby (pictured).

All I have to say is, Times News Team, obstacles are those pesky little things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.  Redford and I are so focused on you!

Fitness Fest

It’s on.

A fitness challenge was issued to the local media for Fit For Life Day.

Our weigh-in was today.  The competition is May 10th.

Crime Team reporter Chris Redford (pictured at today’s weigh-in) and I will represent KTBS.   The other competitors (from The Times, KSLA and KTAL) will be pictured here later as we update you on training efforts.

As a runner, I was clearly lacking in the strength department during today’s weigh-in.  Much work to do.  Will keep you posted.

Time for new iPod music for running.  Any ideas for strong classic rock songs or anything else good for pacing?  What gets you going?
