The Louisiana State Cocktail?
Friday, June 6th, 2008
They’re at it again. State lawmakers ordered another round of debate on whether Sazerac should be the official state cocktail for Louisiana.Â
Legislators who oppose the bill say it could encourage people to drink.  Could a bill have that power over someone?Â
The rye whiskey-based drink originated in New Orleans and some say it’s the first cocktail invented in the United States.  Some lawmakers say Sazerac is significant enough that it deserves state recognition. Â
My take: An official state cocktail is not going to make someone an alcoholic. On the other hand, what’s next: An official state cigarette? Oklahoma has a state meal. How about an official state cell phone ringtone?    Â
The bill now heads to the full house for debate. What do you think?Â
